An immersive leadership experience built around art for thirty teenagers from Kakamega, run with Stand Up Shout Out at the SUSO Mabingwa Youth Centre.
02About this project
Sometimes empowerment looks like a paintbrush. The Nanare Art Challenge placed paint, fabric and possibility in front of thirty young people from Kakamega, many of whom had never drawn before, and invited them to create.
Run in partnership with Stand Up Shout Out at the SUSO Mabingwa Youth Centre in Nairobi, and led by SUSO's founder Peter Fredrick Moll with SUSO staff and youth leaders as facilitators, it grew over several days into far more than an art competition: a journey of leadership, collaboration and self-discovery.
By the end, the foundation reports, all thirty participants said they felt more confident, more exposed to new possibility and more like changemakers. It built on earlier art days the foundation has hosted with visiting artists, including one with young people in Kibera.
