Foundation members and supporters gathered beside a Walk for Elephants vehicle

August 2021

01

Since Jim Nyamu's first walk in 2013, the foundation has walked every one of them with him, carrying the message that ivory belongs to elephants across Kenya and far beyond it.

02About this project

Jim Nyamu walks. Since 2013, when he set out from Mombasa and covered 1,500 kilometres to put the plight of the elephant in front of the people who live alongside them, he has crossed Kenya and much of East Africa on foot under one banner: Ivory Belongs to Elephants. The foundation took the first steps of that first walk with him, and has joined every walk since.

What that support looks like is practical. The team flags Jim off at the start, walks stretches of the route beside him, stops with him to talk to communities along the way about their part in protecting elephants, and is waiting at the finish. In August 2021 the foundation walked the last stretch into Amboseli so that Jim arrived for World Elephant Day on the twelfth. That November, as he set out through the Great Rift Valley, the walk carried 10,000 trees to be planted along the route, and 3,500 of them were seedlings from the foundation.

The walks have grown longer. In July 2023 the foundation was at the flag-off of Jim's East and Central Africa walk through Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and travelled to the Malaba border to see the team across. In October 2024 the Horn of Africa Elephant Campaign Walk ended on its eighty-sixth day with the ceremonial handover of the Kenyan flag at the foundation, where Managing Director Peter Karanja and the team welcomed the walkers home. In April 2022, when Jim received the Presidential Order of the Grand Warrior, the award ceremony was held in the foundation's own garden.
